Earlier this year the Singapore Academy of Law published the “Legal Technology Vision – Towards the digital transformation of the legal sector”. Have you read it? Well, you should. Because it is going to change the way law is practiced here in Singapore.
It is a call to action for lawyers – whether practicing in law firms or serving as in-house counsel in corporations.
At the opening of the legal year in the Supreme Court on 9 January 2017, Chief Justice (CJ) Sundaresh Menon stated that spaces traditionally occupied by lawyers would "diminish." New types of law firms and legal service providers embracing technology and innovative business models are popping up everywhere.
As a profession, lawyers are standing at a crossroads: resist the tide and ignore the disruption, or recognize the potential benefits of legal technology and become a part of the disruption.
The Legal Technology Vision is a 5-year road map to incubating a legal tech scene and where small- and medium-sized law firms will be encouraged to adopt technologies that cover billing systems and communication tools. But it goes beyond just becoming nimble, it looks at the possibility of law firms sharing virtual platforms and workplaces, and collaborating with professionals from other disciplines to create fresh technologies.
